Mind the Gap!
It's a well heard phrase in England especially in the London underground. The train stops, the doors open and overhead you hear the announcer say..."Mind the Gap." The gap is the space between the train and the platform and it can be quite wide at times. You have to be watchful of it as you don't want to stumble and fall through or trip over it on your way out. You don't want to miss it!
On Sunday the sermon was about having faith-gaps...times when our faith is tested as we cannot see or do not know what is in store. We basically have to trust that God will get us through the unknown. We need to be willing to take the step. I'm not sure what my faith-gap is at the moment, but I know coming to live in England was definitely one of them. I had to trust that everything would be okay. And since coming last summer, my life has been truly blessed with awesome friends from around the world and wonderful vacations seeing things I never dreamed of seeing. We found a great home that fit us perfectly and despite the separation from family, I've not really felt homesick. I'm adapting to this new lifestyle well.
We need faith-gaps to keep us from getting complacent, too comfortable in our faith walk. Watch for your gap, it's an open invitation from your creator to build your faith and to be blessed beyond measure.
When we trust the announcer of the gap, we won't miss it and He will see us through it every time!

What is the True Value of Work?
Recently, I read an article written by a young woman about how her generation needs to "NOT get their act together." It really got me thinking about life, how I raised my kids, our dreams and expectations...their's.
I came from a lower income family and learned many lessons, like money doesn't bring you happiness, work hard to get the things you want, family is more important than possessions. When my husband and I got married at 19 and 20, we also had to work hard, working 2 or 3 jobs sometimes. We had dreams and goals. But, we knew in order to achieve those goals, it would require good decisions, wise planning, and realistic expectations. I worked really hard to instill these values in my own children and, I think, we did well teaching them the value of money, a good work ethic, having faith, trusting in God.
Sometimes I get a sense that the young people these days have this idea that life is all about what makes one happy. I feel we do an injustice to our children when we teach them to do what makes you feel good, whatever makes you happy. Life isn't about happiness, it's ultimately about being used by God in whatever purpose He chooses. Though, you hear it taught in the schools..."Find your dream, follow your dream." Well, I hate to say it, but a lot of kids have dreams that will never be attained no matter how hard they want it, try for it, or we push them toward it. The high school football star that will never get picked up by the pros, the dancer or actress who won't make it to Broadway or the movies, the singer who's one in a million trying to break into the big times. I think it's a nice idea, but we set them up for failure and disappointment. It doesn't hurt to try to reach for a dream, but at some point when it's not going well, to know when to start on a different path. We are all blessed with numerous skills and it may be the one that is the least appealing to us that is the one God wants to use.
Work is about work, getting paid so that you can support yourself, pay the bills, not be a burden to society, and prepare for your future. Where did this concept come from that money isn't important? Young people say it all the time. No, it's not everything, but it is a great many things...
it very well makes the world go round,
it takes care of the sick, feeds the hungry, and provides for the orphaned,
it, if saved well, protects and cares for us when we are old and unable to work,
it allows young people the opportunity to try to attain those dreams, to obtain careers, to get college degrees,
it helps missionaries go around the world spreading the gospel and helping those in need,
it provides a child with a new lung and a man with a new heart,
it allows the church to continue it's mission and reach many lost people.
What kind of world would it be if there weren't those who had lots of it and contributed lots of it to so many causes? I look at money as a great blessing, the more God allows us to make, the more we have to give away! And, you are doubly blessed if you are able to find work/career that makes you happy.
However, we were never guaranteed that our "work" was all about what makes us happy. To some, yes, it may come naturally, but to most others, it won't. Sometimes, people are really good at something, but overlook great opportunities because they don't feel "happy" doing it. God never promised us pleasure in our work. Life wasn't meant to be a ride of indulgences and self-pleasure. I doubt back in the day very many people were truly happy doing manual labor. But, we need to remember that if in all things we are thankful to our God, He will bless us and we can be joyous in all things. If life were all about our happiness, God would not have allowed the things into this world that hurt...disease, heartache, pain. I truly believe God expected work to be just that...work. He sent Adam and Eve out of the garden and established that man would "work." I'm sure Adam didn't gain great happiness in toiling the soil, but I can bet you he was grateful to the God who gave him the ability to provide and care for his family and the land to harvest, making him a very joyous man. And if you are joyous, then you can be truly happy.

Getting your act together doesn't mean you can't enjoy life or do the things you love. It simply means being mature, making wise decisions, making plans and following through with your plans, saving for the future, and establishing a career that will result in enough money to do ALL the things you want. Without money there will be no traveling, meeting friends in other places, supporting your causes, following your passions, making your dreams come true, collecting experiences. You cannot have a life full of all these things without working hard to get there! Stop "chasing" the dreams and get a career that will make them all come true!
My prayer for my kids and their spouses is that above all they are grateful and thankful for the life God has given them even if it means they are doing something they don't necessarily like. That their happiness comes from within a place of contentment. That no matter what their circumstances, they have joy!

To Be
The year ended in a blur of joy and pain. My Christmas Eve found me in the ER. After six hours, they released me with pain meds and an ultrasound that showed multiple gall stones. I have an appointment with a surgeon to determine if surgery is required. It wasn't great timing, kind of put a damper on the festivities for me.
So, my year of JOY ended in a bit of trauma. But, it slowed me down and I had some time to think about what I'd like to focus on this year.
What would I like to BE?
Where would I like to BE at the end of this year?
What do I want to BE involved in?
What do I want to BEgin this year?
The word BE stuck in my head. I thought about how I'd like to BE intentional about my life, intentional with my relationships, intentional with my passions, intentional with God. Sometimes I feel like I'm just existing, that I haven't made a mark. It's my intention this year to just BE, whatever it is that God wants me to BE.

Xmas--Joydare
When I was a little girl, I once wrote out the word Xmas as an abbreviation for Christmas. I remember clearly and never forgot when my mom told me it's not Xmas, it's Christmas and it's wrong to use the abbreviation. I've always been careful to spell it out. It's important to keep Christ in Christmas!
This year as I watched the transformation...
The trees are trimmed with silver and gold.
Beautiful twinkling lights brighten our neighbors homes.
Santa arrives in all the stores, even our favorite pets are getting their pictures with Santa.
The "Christmas" radio station plays its holiday songs that tell of sleigh rides, mistletoe kisses, and even hippopotamuses...
The garland is strung, the cookies are made, the gifts are wrapped, yet...I realized something is missing.
It is happening all around us. The world is celebrating Xmas instead of Christmas. They've X-ed Christ out of the holiday. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE everything about Christmas, but we've got to remind the world that it is Christmas we are celebrating. We need Christ back in Christmas. Store clerks are only allowed to say "Happy Holidays." Our beloved Christmas trees are being sold as holiday trees. When did the word "Christmas" become unacceptable. Do we not realize that there would be no Christmas holiday were it not for God come down to earth as a baby. So, this year what will you celebrate...Xmas or Christmas?

Do you still believe? | Joy Dare
Ever read something and have a revelation, an eye-opener, a discovery?
There are times I see or read something that just really makes me think, wakes me up. Sometimes it's actually something I've always known, but hits me in a different light. Do you ever wonder if your prayers go unheard or you get an answer that's not what you think you want or need? We all have, I'm sure, at one time or another questioned God, maybe even screamed at Him....Why!!! When we get an answer that's not to our liking, do we still believe God is good, that His way is better than ours?
When the diagnosis is chronic and the healing doesn't come...
When the spouse walks out the door and doesn't come home...
When the prodigal child turns their back and doesn't return...
When the desperate couple seek out the physicians and still can't have a baby...
When you need the job and it doesn't work out...
How do we handle these situations? The God of our Faith is bigger than all of these. When He doesn't answer in a way we expect/desire/need, what are we supposed to do, how should we react. He is asking us...
Do you still believe?
Do you trust me?
He is showing us Mercy when we are not looking for it. He is working miracles in the midst of the chaos our lives. Look close for the miracles. When you were walking through the mess...
Did you learn something new about yourself?
Did you grow closer to Him?
Did your faith grow?
Did you help someone else suffering?
Did you make a new friend?
Did you share your faith with someone else?
He may not have responded as we wanted, but He did respond and you were blessed.
We do not walk these trials alone. The One who walked trials on earth and died for us all, walks beside us. We can rest assured ALL things work to our good.

Babies Are Back
The baby cardinals came back! It's amazing to me that such a simple thing can bring so much joy. Sitting on the deck, I heard their little chirps, familiar but different. Somehow, before I saw them, I knew. When I looked to see what it was, there they were sitting on the wall.
I didn't think I'd know what happened to them once they left the nest, or if they would even survive. They were so tiny, so fragile, but they did and here they were tail feathers growing strong...soon strong enough to fly off on their own. I watched them play and eat for a while. It didn't take long for momma to arrive continuing to watch over, protect, guide.
Does she know how short her time is? Does she realize that soon they will leave? Will what she taught them be enough? I wanted to tell her that soon she'd have to let go. That she will watch them fly away, she will watch them make decisions that will hurt them, she won't be able to protect them like she can now. There is coming a time when all she can do is trust in what she taught them and that they will see the right way, trust in her God to guide their paths, protect them from harm, and bring them back. I wish I could tell her that broken hearts mend, that peace that surpasses all understanding can and will replace the fear and anxiety.

Read about their start in this world, here.

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.

Flying the Coop
We have babies! Well, baby Cardinals that is right out front in our lilac tree. I've been watching them the last couple of week.
I thought, at first, they were barn swallows because I had two barn swallows, male and female, having a fit at me one day on the porch.
I showed them to Beki and then skipped a few days and what a difference a few days can make. As I pulled back the branches to check on them, one of the pair flew right out of the nest and onto the driveway.
I was worried he was too small to leave the nest and, with gloves, I scooped him back up and put him back in.

However, later I was watching out the window to make sure mom and dad were coming and they were, I saw him sitting on the top of the tree. Of course, I ran to get the camera and as I came back he, again, flew out of the tree and landed in the garden.

He sat in the garden and watched me for awhile, then jumped up onto the porch.

As mom and dad were chirping and carrying on, the little guy flies into one or our bushes and, finally, found himself down into the backyard and into the woods.

I could hear him somewhere in the bushes and mom and dad were continuing to follow him. You could tell they were worried by the way they were carrying on or maybe they were coaxing him to join them. But, they never left him. When I went out to check this morning, baby 2 was also gone. I hope they make it ok out in this great big world. I'm pretty sure they had really good parents who will show them the way.

Isn't that just like life. We nurture and teach our children, then one day unexpectedly they take wings and fly the coop. They think they are all grown up, that they don't need us anymore, but then you get that call...the one that says "I still need you."
We pray that everything we teach them, faith in God, self confidence, respect for others, respect for money, taking care and having pride in your belongings, building relationships, work ethic, will stay with them. Even though they are out of the nest, we continue to guide them. Baby bird still needed mom and dad to show him the way just the same as our children will continue to need us and the same as we continue to need our Heavenly Father to guide us. We don't always agree with the choices our kids make, but we will never forsake them, we are always there for them. How much more so does God love us and wants what is good for us.
He is always there and He will never forsake us.
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. Deuteronomy 31:8
