Sophie's Universe CAL

I worked hard and long on this project and it deserves a little highlight in the blog.  In January, I decided to try something I've never done and join a 20 part Crochet Along (CAL) called Sophie's Universe.  By the time I got my yarn and started, it was nearing March.  I worked on it until our big move to the UK in May.  It was packed and put with our air shipment items which didn't arrive until August.  I finished it up a couple weeks ago and am very proud of the result.

Here is the link to the CAL if you would like to try this pattern.  Sophie's Universe CAL 2015

I used Caron's Simply Soft yarn with a size H crochet hook.  I was concerned about cost, but I wish I'd gone with a cotton yarn that would have less pilling.  My tips, as I learned the hard way, are 1) count, count, count, 2) use stitch markers as recommended to help reduce the counting, 3) use a good quality yarn because this is a long project and you'll find the early rounds start to pill as you get farther along, 4) when they recommend going up a hook size, do it because I didn't and my square is a little wonky due to all the tight single crochets you do in the later round.

I found it to be a lot of fun...challenging in some parts, simple in others.  It was hard to get bored as every round was different.

  2. Love your Sophie! The colours are special. I made the Garden and now the ATB CAL to grow it, but like you, I was concerned about cost and I am also regretting it somewhat. Next full afghan, I will definately use the yarn I really want!
